I just signed up on DietBet.com this week and joined three games/bets.
Two of them last four weeks (January 1st through 28th), and the other one goes for six months (January 1st through June 30th).
I will need to lose about 13 pounds in the first four weeks to win those first two games. Then I’ll need to lose like another 20 pounds or so by the end of June to win that one.
I am confident that no mistake was made here.
My First Time Using DietBet.com
This is my first time using the site DietBet.com.
I heard about it from Doug from the Youtube channel “Working Things Out”.
About four years ago, he did a daily vlog where he lost 100 lbs in a year. Early on in his weight loss journey he mentioned how he joined a few DietBet games and won a little money.
Like him, for me it’s not really so much about the money. Despite the fact that I live in Las Vegas, I’m not a gambler. It’s not my thing. I’d rather EARN money than win it gambling.
So normally this weight loss bet thing might not appeal to me. But in my mind it’s not really gambling anyway.
I’m not betting on a random roll of the dice.
I am betting on myself.
There is no luck factor here. This is not a game of chance. I will win or lose based on my own EFFORT, CONSISTENCY and SELF-DISCIPLINE.
But since I am TOTALLY going to lose that weight anyway, it wouldn’t hurt to grab a few bucks along the way =D
How DietBet.com Works
I’m still figuring it all out.
But so far I guess you just create an account and then look through the available games and decide which one or ones to join. You place your bet – most of them seem to be $35 per game or per month for the longer games.
And you also pay a small membership fee.
I’m not 100% sure exactly how the membership fee works tho.
When joining my 1st, 2nd and 3rd games, a membership fee was tacked on. I paid it for both the 1st game and 2nd game (was $5 each) because I assumed it was required.
But then when I joined the 3rd game, the fee was $20. That caught my attention, and when I looked more carefully, I noticed there was an option to opt out of it. So I removed that fee and just paid the $35 for Month 1 (this was for the 6-month long game).
So anyway, I’m in.
I will do my first monthly weigh-in photos in a couple days, and then we start.
As long as I hit my target weight by the end of each game, I get to split the pot at the end with the other players who hit their target weight.
Also, if I understand right, I think those who pay the membership fee also get to participate in weekly drawings for additional prizes outside the regular games. I think. I’m not totally sure how that works, but I’ll figure it out as I go along.
Lastly, there’s a social media aspect to the game. I haven’t used it yet, but I guess each game has its own feed where players can chat, post update photos and encourage each other – kind of like how Facebook groups work.
I might try it out, but with all the blogging I plan to do in 2021, I don’t expect to spend a whole lot of time in those social feeds. But we’ll see.
How Much Will I Win?
I really have no idea.
It depends on how many people stay in the game til the end and reach their goal weight vs how many drop out. Since everyone who hits goal weight wins, we would all just get our money back if nobody drops out and everyone loses enough weight.
In one of his videos Doug said that he won like 13 bucks from his first DietBet game. So I’m not expecting to win a lot here. But we’ll see how it goes.
What Do I Need to Do to Win?
I’ve already been doing my own weight loss challenge for the past six weeks. So far I’m only down seven pounds with a few days remaining in Week 6.
That rate of weight loss might just barely be enough for the 6-month game. But I will have to lose weight faster in order to win the two 4-week games.
I’ll need to lose about three pounds a week to win the shorter games. So it looks like I’m going to have to start exercising more frequently come January 1st in order to avoid losing my money.
Wish me luck!
I mean…wish me effort, consistency and self-discipline. 😉
