My 2021 Year in Review – Well THAT Sucked

My 2021 Year in Review – Well THAT Sucked

If 2020 was a dumpster fire, then for me 2021 was a dumpster fire INSIDE a dumpster fire.

At the bottom of a sewer.

That empties into a toxic landfill.

On the butthole side of some desolate planet in the Outer Rim.

If there’s a bright center to the universe, then 2021 was the worst dumpster fire on the butthole side of the planet that it’s farthest from.

Well 2021 Sucked

So at the beginning of 2021, I wrote out some ridiculously ambitious goals for the year in the form of a long-form positive affirmation (I guess that’s what you’d call it).

That sort of thing actually worked for me in the past. So I was thinking, “Yeah…this is TOTALLY gonna work. This will bust me out of that rut I’ve been stuck in since 2017.”

While the goals sounded pretty far out there, they actually weren’t too far out of reach. They were all HUMANLY POSSIBLE. I know of other bloggers and youtubers who have accomplished all of those things and more – even within a single year.

So it seemed like a huge stretch for me – but at the same time DOABLE.

I mean, I’m nothing special, but I HAVE done some pretty cool stuff in previous years.

  • I used to work out a lot.
  • I’ve changed up my diet and leaned out in the past.
  • I’ve written 8,000+ words in a day, written 14 articles in a day, written 60+ articles in a month and made hundreds of dollars a month in passive income.
  • I even wrote a couple of short ebooks several years back.
  • I’ve done dozens of vlogs and podcasts and written over 1,500 blog posts and articles for clients and for my own blogs and niche sites.
  • And I’ve spent over 20 years building my skills as a writer, cartoonist, photographer, content creator and editor – online and offline – along with some other stuff.

In other words: I have the skills, knowledge, resources and experience to make those seemingly crazy goals happen.

It’s just a matter of putting it all together and doing the kinds of things I’ve already done in the past – just doing them more consistently and scaling it up a bit.

But I didn’t even come close.

In some ways, I actually went backwards. Probably because I was lacking that ONE SKILL – the most critical skill – needed for success: CONSISTENCY.

Having the self-discipline to be consistent day in and day out is a skill all by itself, one that requires time and patience and practice to develop. And it’s the one thing I most need to work on going forward in 2022.

So whatever I accomplished in the past doesn’t really matter anymore because that’s not where I’m at today. And I need to start from where I’m at, not where I used to be or where I think I should be by now. I need to just start where I’m at and baby step it from there.

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Honestly, I feel stupid even reviewing last year’s goals. I am SO TEMPTED to just blow this off right now, put it behind me and save myself the embarrassment of talking about 2021 on my blog ever again.

But where’s the fun in that?

So let’s take a detailed look at just how much I embarrassed myself in 2021, shall we?

Last Year’s Goals

So here are my HORRIBLY BAD JOKES (aka goals) from last year:

  1. Lose 130 lbs
  2. Write 1,000 blog posts
  3. Create hundreds of vlogs and podcast episodes
  4. Make $2,000/month online
  5. Write 3 ebooks

1. Did I Lose 130 lbs in 2021?

HELL to the NO.

I actually went backwards.

I did manage to lose a few pounds early in 2021. But then I proceeded to spend the rest of 2021 GAINING THEM ALL BACK PLUS ANOTHER 22 LBS by December 20. A week before Thanksgiving I weighed in at 320. And then I gained 17 lbs after Thanksgiving and hit a new all-time high of 337 lbs on December 18 (and again on 12/20).

So I actually GAINED 22 lbs in 2021.

But idk, something interesting happened the week of Christmas.

I got a nasty stomach virus that laid me out for a few days. Thanks to a combination of chronic diarrhea and zero appetite, I lost 16 lbs in 4 days. But it was mostly just fluid loss, so I gained some of it back as I recovered and ended the year at 325 lbs.

So I guess OVERALL, from January 1st to December 31st, I went from 315 to 325 and “only” gained 10 lbs total.

2. Did I Write 1,000 Blog Posts in 2021?

I didn’t.

But I DID manage to write 49 posts in 2021, which is almost DOUBLE the number of blog posts that I wrote and published in 2020.

So technically, that’s a small win.

It’s progress, and I’m actually happy about it.

3. Did I Restart My Youtube Channel and Podcast in 2021?

Yes and no.

As far as what I INTENDED for 2021 (uploading hundreds of videos and podcasts), I barely put a dent in that goal. But I did make a few videos this past year.

In fact, I created some new Youtube channels, each focusing on a specific topic/niche. That way people can pick and choose which topics to subscribe to.

I don’t have content put up yet on all of them, but I did make some weight loss vlogs on one channel (before gaining that 22 lbs lol). And I even did a few sketch art timelapse videos on the cartooning channel.

3b. My Podcast Tho?

Oh yeah.

My podcast.

After uploading my first episode back in 2019, I did nothing on it for the next couple years.

However, I DID start doing a podcast in 2021 with my buddy Michael from WriterSanctuary on his channel, but…uh…er…um…I stopped doing that.

Anyway, last month (November 2021), I finally did the second episode for my own podcast.

Then, a couple weeks ago, I did the third episode with MILLIONS more on the way =D.

4. Did I Earn $2,000 in a Month in 2021?

Please stop with all these embarrassing questions that you already know the answer to.

No, I didn’t even come close on this goal either.

In fact, I didn’t even earn HALF that amount for the ENTIRE YEAR, much less in a single month. So that makes 2021 my worst year ever in terms of making money online.

Well, other than my very first year of blogging and freelance writing (2012) in which I only made a few hundred bucks, 2021 was my worst year ever.

Worst year since 2012.

5. Did I Write 3 eBooks in 2021?

Please stop already.

COMIC: 2021 Year in Review: FAIL

So What About Next Year?

Okay, so that’s my Year of the Suck 2021.

I guess I made a teeny bit of progress in terms of creating content for my blog and my podcast. But other than that – TOTAL DUMPSTER FIRE.

Do I have goals and plans for 2022?

And you can read all about it on the blog next week.

Alrighty then, guys. I hope you had a better 2021 than I did. And if not, hey, 2022 is a brand new year. This year is a clean slate filled with possibilities.

So let’s get on it.
